Chemical contaminants (trace metals, persistent organic pollutants) in albacore tuna from western Indian and south-eastern Atlantic Oceans: Trophic influence and potential as tracers of populations ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Brach-papa, Christophe; Auger, Dominique; Bodin, Nathalie; Bruzac, Sandrine; Crochet, Sylvette; Degroote, Maxime; Hollanda, Stephanie J.; Hubert, Clarisse; Knoery, Joel; Munschy, Catherine; Puech, Alexis; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Thomas, Bastien; West, Wendy; Bourjea, Jerome; Nikolic, Natacha.
Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is a highly commercial fish species harvested in the world's Oceans. Identifying the potential links between populations is one of the key tools that can improve the current management across fisheries areas. In addition to characterising populations' contamination state, chemical compounds can help refine foraging areas, individual flows and populations' structure, especially when combined with other intrinsic biogeochemical (trophic) markers such as carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of seven selected trace metals – chromium, nickel, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead – in the muscle of 443 albacore tunas, collected over two seasons and/or years in the...

Distribution of silver in mussels and oysters along the French coasts: Data from the national monitoring program ArchiMer
Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Auger, Dominique; Roux, Nathalie; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Santini, Anne.
Distribution and behavior of many trace elements in the aquatic environment has been well characterized, but little is known about silver (Ag) concentrations in coastal waters, even though this element ranks among the most toxic to marine invertebrates (Calabrese et al., 1977 ; Fisher and Hook, 1997 ; Webb and Wood, 1998). Studies conducted by Flegal et al. (1995), River-Duarte et al. (1999), and Ndung'u et al. (2001), provided the first valuable data on Ag distribution in the oceanic environment, indicating that this element is found in very low concentrations in the dissolved phase. However, although silver concentrations in coastal waters do not reach the nanomolar range (Smith and Flegal, 1993 ; Squire et al., 2002), formation of a stable chloro...

Etude de la contamination de pectinidés (coquilles Saint-Jacques et pétoncles) par le cadmium, le mercure et le plomb dans quelques zones de pêche françaises ArchiMer
Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Crochet, Sylvette; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Claisse, Didier.

Interactions between Volatile Reduced Sulfur Compounds and Metals in the Seine Estuary (France) ArchiMer
Cozic, Amandine; Viollier, E; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Knoery, Joel; Rozuel, Emmanuelle.
Concentrations of volatile hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), methane thiol (MeSH), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) in the Seine estuary (France) were investigated in spring 2005 using samples collected from the first meter beneath the surface. Levels of dissolved metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Pb), suspended particulate matter, and particular organic carbon were also assessed. Maximum concentrations were 0.80 nM for H2S, 0.64 nM for OCS, 3.06 nM for MeSH, 11.06 nM for DMS, and 1.18 nM for DMDS, and different features were observed for the five volatile reduced sulfur compounds (VRSCs). Experiments were conducted to determine silver-VRSC conditional stability constants. Major interactions were observed between H2S and...

Metal concentrations in sediment and Nereis diversicolor in two Moroccan lagoons: Khnifiss and Oualidia ArchiMer
Idardare, Zaina; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Moukrim, A; Alla, A; Auger, Dominique; Lefrere, L; Rozuel, Emmanuelle.
Metal concentrations were measured monthly during an annual cycle (December 2004 to January 2006) in the tissues of Nereis diversicolor ragworms and sediment from two Moroccan Atlantic coastal lagoons: Oualidia in the north, situated in a highly industrialised urban area and Khnifiss in the south, far from anthropogenic influences. Relatively high levels of Zn, Ag and Cd were found in the sediment of Oualidia lagoon, while Ni concentrations were shown to be high at Khnifiss. The significant metal levels at Oualidia are a result of industrial and urban discharges, coupled with discharges from adjacent phosphate ore processing plants. Trace metal concentrations in worms vary according to season; they are usually high in winter and spring, in relation to the...

Monitoring of Pb Contamination in Loire Estuary: Trends, Distribution and Isotopic composition ArchiMer
Brach-papa, Christophe; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Knoery, Joel; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Auger, Dominique; Bretaudeau-sanjuan, Jane; Crochet, Sylvette; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Thomas, Bastien; Vasileva, Emilia; Oriana, Anna Maria.
The Loire River is one of the largest river systems in Western Europe and a major source of continental inputs to the marine environment in the Bay of Biscay. Its catchment area drains agricultural and industrial zones and its estuary is increasingly urbanized. Even if the Loire River is not considered as a highly polluted system, studies have shown estuarine Pb contamination due to industrial inputs and combustion of leaded gasoline until the mid 1990’s. A retrospective study, based on the analysis (Pb levels and isotopic composition) of mussel samples collected by the French mussel watch program (RNO/ROCCH) has highlighted this contamination and its trend between 1985-2005 (Couture et al., 2010). This poster furthers the work initiated by Couture et al....

Patterns of trace metal bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in a phytoplankton-zooplankton-small pelagic fish marine food web ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Strady, Emilie; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Radakovitch, Olivier; Brach-papa, Christophe; Crochet, Sylvette; Knoery, Joel; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Thomas, Bastien; Tronczynski, Jacek; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois.
Trace metal contamination in the European sardine and anchovy food web was investigated in the Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean Sea, including seawater and size fractions of plankton. The results highlighted: i) higher and more variable concentrations in the smaller plankton size classes for all metals except cadmium; ii) higher concentrations in anchovy versus sardine for all elements except lead; iii) different patterns of metal bioaccumulation through the food web: cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, lead and zinc displayed continuously decreasing concentrations (with the exception of increased zinc in fish only), while mercury concentrations dropped considerably in larger plankton size classes and rose significantly in fish. Lastly, cadmium concentrations...

Retrospective study of metal contamination time trends in the French part of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Boutier, Bernard; Quintin, Jean-yves; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Auger, Dominique; Bretaudeau-sanjuan, Jane.
Two cores were sampled in the Bay of Biscay: one a few miles off the Gironde estuary (pointe de la Coubre), the other near the Spanish border (Capbreton canyon) to study past variations in sediment contamination. Radiochronology (210Pb, 137Cs) and total metal determinations by ICP-MS allowed the study of time trends for metal concentrations in sediment. Off the Gironde, during the time interval recorded by the core (1958–1999), all metal concentrations remained less than OSPAR background values. Some variations occurred along the Cd and Zn profiles, which may correspond to a very attenuated signal from the Gironde outputs. This suggests that this area was not submitted to any significant anthropogenic input of metals between 1958 and 1999. In the canyon of...

Trace metal concentrations in the muscle of seven marine species: Comparison between the Gulf of Lions (North-West Mediterranean Sea) and the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean) ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine; Cresson, Pierre; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Bustamante, Paco; Brach-papa, Christophe; Bruzac, Sandrine; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Bouchoucha, Marc.
Concentrations of 6 trace metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the muscle of 2 sharks (Galeus melastomus and Scyliorhinus canicula), 4 teleosts (Helicolenus dactylopterus, Lepidorhombus boscii, Micromesistius poutassou and Phycis blennoides) and 1 crustacean (Nephrops norvegicus) were compared between the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea). Although average concentrations and the trace element pollution index were generally higher in the Gulf of Lions, significant differences between the two ecosystems were only found for Zn for Helicolenus dactylopterus, and for Ag and Cu for the crustacean N. norvegicus. Moreover, some relationships between trophic level or size and metal concentrations were found for these two...

Two-dimensional distribution of living benthic foraminifera in anoxic sediment layers of an estuarine mudflat (Loire Estuary, France) ArchiMer
De Chanvalon, A. Thibault; Metzger, E.; Mouret, A.; Cesbron, F.; Knoery, Joel; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Launeau, P.; Nardelli, M. P.; Jorissen, F. J.; Geslin, E..
We present a new rapid and accurate protocol to simultaneously sample benthic living foraminifera in two dimensions in a centimeter scale vertical grid and dissolved iron in high resolution (200 μm). Such an approach appears crucial to study foraminiferal ecology in heterogeneous environments. The foraminiferal faunas of the main intertidal mudflat of the Loire estuary are dominated by Ammonia tepida, which accounts for 92 % of the living assemblage (CTG-labeled). Its vertical distribution shows a first density maximum at the surface, a sharp decrease in the next two centimeter followed by a well defined second maximum between 3 and 8 cm depth. The heterogeneity of A. tepida in this 3–8 cm depth layer was calculated by the Moran's Index and reveals lateral...
